Two or more routers connected to the same LAN subnet form an HSRP (Hot Standby Routing Protocol) group. A single router becomes active while two (or more routers) act as standby. The HSRP active router implements a virtual IP address. The virtual IP address is configured as part of HSRP configuration using the Òstandby ipÓ command. The virtual IP address is the same on all HSRP routers and the configuration is needed on all HSRP routers. The physical IP address is configured using the usual Òip addressÓ command. The virtual IP address is in the same subnet as the interface IP address, but the two are different.
