"PC20" has been included in the LAN by connecting it to a free port in Switch "SW1". All the ports in Switch "SW1" are manually configured as Half-duplex and 100Mbps of speed. However, the PC20 is not manually configured with the same information and defaults to AUTO negotiation. What happens if PC20 is connected to SW1?
The NIC of the PC will decrease its speed to 10Mbps and keep half-duplex, the connection will be established.
The NIC of the PC will default to 100Mbps half duplex and the connection will be established.
There is a duplex mismatch. The connection will be established but network performance will be compromised.
The port of the switch and the NIC of the PC will not form a link.
The link will be formed. If the NIC on the PC does not see any auto-negotiation from the other end, it will default to 100 Mbps, half-duplex. For more information refer to: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/switches/catalyst-6500-series-switches/17053-46.html
