Which layer(s) of the OSI Model does 802.11 Wi-Fi operate in?
Layer 3 - Network
Layer 2 - Datalink
Both Layer 2 and Layer 3
Both Layer 1 and Layer 2
Layer 1 - Physical
The 802.11 protocol operates in two very specific layers of the OSI model; Layer 1 and Layer 2. Just because Layer 1 is "Physical" it doesn't mean that it must be physical cabling - radio waves also apply here. In this case, Layer 1 defines the frequency and modulation types used, including pre-amble to allow the radios to synchronise. Layer 2 is the where MAC addresses and BSSID apply. Layer 3 (and above) do not apply directly here, but they are dependant on Layer 1 & 2 working correctly.
