The term FHRP (First Hop Redundancy Protocol) refers to a family of protocols that provide default gateway redundancy to hosts at the first packet hop. The three well-known FHRPs are: HSRP (Hot Standby Router Protocol), VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol), and GLBP (Gateway Load Balancing Protocol). HSRP and GLBP were both developed by Cisco and they are proprietary protocols. VRRP is an IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) standard defined in RFC 5798.
